Truffle Hunting

In 2018, we identified a lack of trained truffle detection dogs to service the burgeoning South Australian Truffle industry and created “Adelaide Hills Truffle Dogs” with handpicked canine duo, Ruby the Koolie and Gus the Labrador. Whilst knowing little about truffles, their lifecycle and cultivation, we set out to educate ourselves as much as possible by travelling to Manjimup in Western Australia to learn from handlers and farmers located in this world renowned truffle producing area. Armed with this knowledge, and with extensive canine detection experience in various scent disciplines, we set out to be the first dedicated truffle hunting team based in South Australia.

Detection Dogs SA now service over 25 South Australian truffieres located throughout the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and the South-East. We not only provide a truffle canine detection service, but are also trained in providing advice in grading, harvesting and cultivating this delicate fungus.

Detection Dogs SA are more than happy, and thoroughly enjoy, planning and operating paid public tours on your truffiere and are strong advocates for the amazing food and tourism industry in South Australia.
